FLORICULTURE AND GREENHOUSE OPERATIONS Grades: 10, 11, 12; 1 Term, Ability = All Students in the class will study the different areas of the floriculture industry that includes the production and marketing of many of the flowering and ornamental plants that humans use everyday. A variety of class activities, tours and projects will provide many career exploration opportunities for all students. Students will learn how to perform a variety of plant reproduction techniques by propagating and growing their own flowering plants in class. Students will study the environment factors that are important for plant growth and apply the most modern growing technologies by working in a state of the art production greenhouse. Students will complete lab activities during the class to apply concepts such as nutrient analysis, pest management strategies, and the use of growth stimulants. Students will apply business management principles in this class through the development and operation of a student run greenhouse business. Working with the local banker in town the class will plan the entire production and marketing of crops of plants that will be grown in the greenhouse that will be sold at the end of the year. Students will take on all roles in operating this student run business. Units in retail floristry will be covered in this class in which student will work on identifying common cut flowers, making floral arrangements, and constructing corsages and boutonnieres for a variety of occasions. Students will design their flowers for prom and plan for the flowers for a future wedding. Students will work on floral projects in the spring including making floral arrangements, flowering potted plants, and flowers to wear for the various banquets and concerts being held at all 3 buildings in our school at Foley and for community events during the spring trimester.
