SMALL ANIMALS VETERINARY SCIENCE Grades: 10, 11, 12; 1 Term, Ability = All This course is designed to give students an awareness of many different areas related to small companion animals that are a big part of our lives. Students will study breeds of dogs, cats, birds, and fish and be able to identify many of the common species that are used as pets. Class time will be spent learning about gerbils, guinea pigs, hamsters and chinchillas. Many applied lab activities and hands on lessons will be used to help teach the concepts in this class. General topics in animal nutrition, animal health, and general care will be covered. Basic lessons in vet sciences will be presented in the class where students will study animal systems, anatomy, and diseases. Students will have a chance to experience some veterinary procedures through the use of videos and hands on activities. Students will do activities in suturing, medication administration, and giving injections, and performing animal dissections as part of the vet procedures unit. Live animals will be used for lessons in the class when available. Career exploration in the small animal industry and veterinary medicine will also be covered in this class.
