Natural Resource Management

NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12; 1 Term, Ability = All

This class is designed to give students hands on and applied learning experience with many different natural resources areas in our community. Students will study fish and wildlife management practices and apply these practices by evaluating wildlife habitat, planting food and nesting habitat plots, studying the game hunting quotas, and building and constructing pheasant feeders. Students will study local lakes and determine conditions of fish populations and evaluate lake water quality by doing sample testing. Students will work on a local river doing fish sampling and surface water quality checks. Students will study soil and groundwater resources where they will work outdoors identifying soil types and evaluate soil areas to determine limitations for buildings or soil erosion potential. Students will work with local agencies to collect well water samples perform tests on local drinking water sources to determine bacteria contaminations and nitrate levels and study how water resources are being utilized and managed in our community. Students will study forestry and woodlot management. Students will measure trees and determine the value of marketable trees in a wooded area. Students will work out in a local woodlot and use tools such as chainsaws and measuring rules to apply concepts in timber stand improvement. Students will study orienteering skills by using compasses, maps, (GPS) global positioning equipment and satellite communications equipment out in wooded area or on the local lakes and use GIS technology to map land areas. Part of the class will be used to study renewable and nonrenewable energy sources and students will have a chance to see how common fuels such as oil, natural gas, and petroleum are produced. Students will examine the use of alternative fuel sources such as biofuels and ethanol. Students will complete a unit that will look at waste management where they will see how local garbage, waste water, and other sources of waste are handled in the community. Students will use a variety of videos and field trips to better understand the concepts in this unit.
